Who made them so wondrous
Who made them so wondrous
Artist's Note
We were thrown into this place by some unknown force.Every being endures its own trials
— yet the journey is not equal for all.
Some rise through hardship and grow.
Some spend their days in compromise, passing time in surplus.
Some, worn down by the struggle, come to place a period at the end of themselves.
For those never given even the capacity to endure — the wall simply cannot be crossed.
That unknown force knows this, and meets it with cold silence.
They live here, thrown into a place they never chose.
This was not the ground they wanted. These were not the trials they sought.
They know how futile it is to ask why they must live this way.
Their only wish is to leave this place and simply live.
The unknown force has turned away from their pain and longing.
But I gather them from contaminated ground, record a single fragment of their lives,
lift them from the place of refuse where cruel fate had set them down,
and bury them in fertile soil where they may take root fully.
There, I bring the work to its close.
I am neither stronger nor greater than that unknown force.
I only help them escape from where they are — while that force does nothing but look away.
And to them, I exist as an absolute.
You!
May you walk only on flower paths from now on.
Working Process
This project consists of four parts: Portrait, Flower Path, Return, and Gopuri.
The record began on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, when I discovered a plant growing out of a pile of trash.
Part 1, Portrait, photographed the discovered plants realistically in the studio in order to expose their reality as starkly as possible.
These are, in effect, identification photographs, meant to certify their existence.
Rather than using paper backdrops, for environmental reasons, I adjusted the background color and brightness using a beam projector.
Part 2, Flower Path, began out of compassion for these lowly, easily overlooked beings. Wanting to create conditions separated from their harsh reality, an idealized setting rather than the exhausting life they had endured, I installed a floral-patterned fabric backdrop near each collection site and photographed the plants against it.
Part 3, Return, deals with death, the inevitable end. It proceeds from the premise that no matter how far a being has walked the "flower path," the extinction of existence cannot be avoided.
I collected only plants that had lived and died in the harsh, filthy trash heap, and photographed them floating on water.
Through water's endless cycle, evaporating and returning again as water, I sought to treat death not as extinction but as circulation.
Part 4, Gopuri, is an installation inspired by 고풀이 (gopuri), a specific procedure within the traditional Korean shamanic ritual 씻김굿 (ssitgim-gut).
Gopuri is a rite in which a tied knot is untied, releasing the deceased's 한 (han, a deep-seated grief or resentment) so that they may travel peacefully to the afterlife. I painted a 반가사유상 (Pensive Bodhisattva statue) with white watercolor paint in place of the white cotton cord traditionally used in the ritual, likening the paint's washing away in life-sustaining water to the untying of the knot.
The work asks what it is, exactly, that is being released.
The answer it offers is "shadow": that the joys and sorrows of life are, like a shadow cast on a wall, ultimately without substance.
This record was carried out over roughly seven years, exceeding the goal of 250 pieces I had silently set for myself.
Each time I finished photographing a plant, I separated it from the trash and planted it in soil.
Even if the "certain force" that determined their fate remained indifferent, I became, to them, the being who granted them a new life.
To them, I am "god."
In the course of this work, I also collected several dozen bags' worth of trash.
