Artist's Note
One day, without warning,
on a very clear day when a cold air hung in the atmosphere,
I looked for a long time at the northern sky.
No clouds, no boundaries, only a sky filled with a single color.
Before that empty clarity, thought finally becomes simple.
I perceive it as "the sky."
But can I state, with any certainty, that it is "the sky"?
Thought always begins with a desire to add something, to shape and to frame.
Adding form, building narrative, layering emotion, then removing what was added and collapsing what was built, thought grows gradually more complex and heavier in the process.
But the most essential answer does not lie in adding or accumulating.
It comes from simplicity, from stripping away and stripping away again, the way noise is cleared from a signal.
One color, one plane, one gaze.
Monochrome remains, in the place where form and narrative have been erased, only as its own existence.
In Buddhism, the six sense faculties, eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, are called yukgeun (the six roots of perception), and the six objects they encounter, form, sound, scent, taste, touch, and phenomena, are called yukgyeong (the six objects of perception).
Where a root meets its object, six kinds of awareness arise, called yuksik (the six consciousnesses), and these eighteen elements together are said to construct the world, hence the term sippalgye (the eighteen realms).
Just as the eye meets form and "seeing" arises, in the very moment I looked at the sky and named it "a single color," root, object, and consciousness were already working together.
The scriptures counsel against dwelling in yukgyeong.
What is seen by the eye and heard by the ear is not substance but merely a phenomenon temporarily produced by the meeting of root and object, so a mind that dwells in that appearance, called sang, only obscures its own true nature.
Then where does the true "seeing" of "it" actually reside?
In the material surface of pigment, or in the concepts and structures embalmed by the world's definitions?
This question connects directly to my professional practice in color work.
For many years, at the request of camera research institutes, I have produced a great number of camera test charts.
In the process of calculating precise color and density, I have routinely experienced how, even with the same subject, results diverge sharply depending on wavelength (in nanometers), light source conditions, and viewing angle.
Just as color and form shift according to wavelength and surrounding viewing conditions, the right and wrong we arrive at through perception are also valid only under "this condition, right now," and can never be treated as absolute.
This colorimetric reflection, a wariness toward how easily what meets the eye is misread and how often the senses deceive themselves, is another root of this body of work.
I have tried to translate this idea, that nothing can be stated with certainty, into the language of today's media.
On the surface lie the signs and data that constitute the essence of color: the 0s and 1s of binary code, a 24 bit code arranged like stones on a Go board, the QR code that mediates media, and the physical formula of wavelength that proves the vibration of light, each testifying to a single color from a different layer.
This is an attempt to quietly lift color, as an object of perception, out of the place of an, the eye, and move it into the place of beop, the phenomena that ui, the mind, takes as its own object, and to speak of the ambiguity of existence, that what we encounter may or may not be substance at all.
When the sensory illusion that forms on the retina is erased, one moves beyond the stage of "seeing" an object with the eye into the full conceptual realm of intellectually "reading" and "associating."
Only when a simple color is no longer seen merely as color can it finally point to something beyond itself.
I hope that in this world of monochrome, stripped of every last excess, I might finally come face to face with the pure essence of color, and yet even I cannot say, with certainty, that I could call it "that."
As he took his leave of the little prince, the fox shared one last secret.
"Here is my secret. It is very simple. It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye."
This call to set the eye aside and move into the place of the heart lies, for a moment, alongside my own attempt to lift color out of the place of an and move it into the place of beop. And yet is what is gained by seeing with the heart not simply another sang, one formed by ui in place of the one once formed by an? The scriptures' counsel not to dwell anywhere within sippalgye would seem to apply equally to conviction shaped by the heart, not only to sight. Even the fox's secret is only one more place to stand, not a final destination.
So I ask again.
"Was the northern sky I saw on that very clear day, when a cold air hung in the atmosphere, truly 'the sky'?"
