Artist's Note
Water has no choice.
At the fork in its path, it does not hesitate.
Terrain, density, gravity — these have already decided the answer.
We call this flow, but perhaps it is not flow at all. Perhaps it is transit —
a sentence already written, merely uttered in time.
I have long doubted the notion of free will.
Is human choice not also, like the water's course, the sum of unseen conditions?
Even in the moment we believe ourselves to be deciding, are we not simply arriving at a necessity already reached by countless prior causes?
Spinoza said that men believe themselves free only because they are conscious of their actions, and ignorant of the causes that determine them.
Water, too, is likely no different.
If water possessed consciousness, it might believe it had carved its own path.
Sand does not lie.
Where water has passed, only a single trace remains —
as if no other possibility had ever existed.
Standing before this form, I ask:
what if our lives are no different —
what if the choices we believed we were making,
were nothing more than the act of transcribing a sentence already fixed?
Buddhism calls this dependent origination (緣起).
All things arise through conditions; nothing exists apart from them.
Neither the path of water nor the course of a life begins from an independent cause.
Each is only a mark, necessarily drawn out from within a web of countless entangled conditions.
This is not a sentence written by water,
but a sentence already written, revealed through water.
I am not its author —
only the one who witnessed the moment of its utterance, and set it down.
