Artist's Note
My wife died.
Reason had to accept death; emotion resisted and denied it.
The seers who could speak of fate answered only that it was fate.
And so, according to his own fate, leaving two children behind, he met death.
Everything that lives has its own path,
and in that process, it vanishes, leaving a trace behind.
The final stage of vanishing is pain, and pain remains as a motionless thing.
This has repeated endlessly since the beginning of time, across eons,
and we live only within a single instant of that infinite repetition.
Only when the consciousness of vanishing is accepted into the unconscious does life finally grow abundant,
but not knowing whether what we know is truly known, or whether what we don't know is truly unknown,
we live like moths unable to find their bearings.
"I release you to your fate."
Work Process
Dead anchovies. A nail once holding wood together, now discarded as useless.
Matches burned one by one, having spent their purpose.
My own hair, gathered over a year. Wood shavings left over from planing timber.
I gather things whose use has run out, arrange them, and photograph them.
And what I look at is not the objects settled in that space, but the maze of space between them
the maze where one does not know which way to go.
