Artist's Note
a meal
For an entire year, I photographed every meal I ate.
I arranged them into the form of a calendar.
Square by square, day by day, each table replaces the place where a date should be.
We spread before ourselves this feast of dazzling, beautiful flavor.
We live in an age of such worn, hard-won abundance that not a single day passes without meat or seafood on the plate.
We consume this abundance as though it were simply our due, numb to it.
The tables in these photographs are lavish, varied, wearing a different face at every meal.
Yet within that repeating splendor, I began at some point to ask myself:
what am I eating right now, and how conscious am I of the fact that I am eating it at all?
Whatever became the ingredients on my plate must have found it hard to live, too.
Before arriving on the table, each life struggled, grew, and tried to survive in its own way.
It is because of that struggle that this table can be set today.
But we do not face that struggle.
Before food that has been trimmed, cooked, and plated, the time that came before it is erased.
What remains is only the taste and abundance of this present moment—and myself, consuming it.
We too, who have no choice but to eat in order to live, find life hard to bear.
Eating every day is the most basic and repetitive labor of survival.
Behind every lavish table lie the day's livelihood, fatigue, relationships, and passing time, all layered together.
When I began this project, I simply wanted to record the act of eating.
But pressing the shutter every day for a year, I gradually came to see another layer hidden within that repetition:
splendor and exhaustion, abundance and hardship, indulgence and numbness, all existing at once within a single photograph.
This is also why I chose the form of a calendar.
A calendar is a human way of managing and controlling time—dividing it into squares, assigning it to days of the week, reducing each day to a uniform unit.
But what fills those squares is anything but uniform: meals that wear a different face every day.
At the point where controlled form collides with the uncontrollable content of life, I wanted to find a portrait of the way we live.
In the end, this work is a record of myself, and at the same time a record of the landscape of survival we all share.
Before a table that is set and emptied every day, I ask:
What do we eat, and by eating what, do we go on living?
In that repetition, how much hardship do we endure, day after day?
And still, when the time comes, I find myself wondering again,
"What should I eat?"
