작가 머리말

밤의 장막이 내려앉은 도시의 수평선 위로, 거대한 빛의 군집이 솟아오른다.

어둠을 뚫고 뿜어져 나오는 저 황금빛 점들은 마치 대지 위에 박힌 거대한 보석처럼 찬란하다.

우리는 그것을 '집'이라 부르며, 이 시대의 가장 고귀한 성물(聖物)로 숭배한다.

하지만 그 찬란한 광휘(光輝)를 마주하는 순간, 질문은 시작된다.

'저 빛은 우리를 안식으로 인도하는가, 우리를 가두는 거대한 우리(cage)의 문설주인가.

오늘날의 주거는 생존을 위한 공간을 넘어, 평생의 노동과 시간을 통째로 함몰시켜야만 도달할 수 있는 '신성한 영지'가 되었다.

우리는 그 보석을 손에 넣기 위해 대출이라는 가용한 재산를 넘어 미래를 현재로 끌어와 지급하고 있다.

소유하는 순간 자유로워질 것이라 믿었으나, 역설적으로 그 보석 같은 공간에 안착하는 동시에 삶은 달콤하게 저당 잡힌다.

청춘은 원금을 상환하는 성실함으로 대체되고, 중년의 숙련된 노동은 소유를 유지하기 위한 투쟁으로 소진되고,

노년의 여유라는 안도감 뒤에 숨은 공허함으로 남는다.

인간으로서 진실되게 누려야 할 생의 자유로워야 했을 계절들은 그 벽과 천장 사이에

갇혀 증발해 버릴 수 있다.

'사는 것(living)'이라는 동사는 어느덧 '갚는 것(repaying)'이라는 의무로 치환되었고,

현대인은 거대한 ‘콘크리트 보석’을 떠받치는 형벌을 자처하는 존재가 되었다.

이 끝없는 갈망은 이제 단순한 주거 욕구를 넘어, 이 시대의 새로운 신앙이자 넘볼 수 없는 계급의 상징이 되었다.

가장 단단해 보이는 구조 속 불빛 안에는, 세상에서 가장 연약하고 불안한 인간의 욕망이 들어가 더 파편화되고 고립되어 간다.

이것은 눈부신 비극의 기록이다.

보석은 우리를 보호하고 있는가?

구속하고 있는가?

우리는 보석의 주인인가?

광휘를 위해 연소시키는 연료인가?

우리가 지키려는 것은 가치가 있는 보석인가?

시스템이 만들어낸 환영에 불과한 또 하나의 바위인가?

“시지프스에게 필요한 것은 바위를 밀어 올릴 더 큰 힘이 아니라,

잠시 멈춰 서서 무엇을 밀어 올리고 있는지 돌아보는 용기일지 모른다.”

Above the city's horizon, where the curtain of night has fallen, a vast constellation of light rises.

Those golden points piercing the darkness blaze like enormous jewels embedded in the earth.

We call them home, and worship them as the most sacred objects of this age.

Yet the moment we face that brilliant radiance, a question begins:

Is that light guiding us toward rest, or is it the doorpost of an enormous cage that holds us?

Today, housing has become something beyond a space for survival.

It has become a sacred domain, one that can only be reached by surrendering an entire lifetime of labor and time.

To possess that jewel, we pull the future into the present, paying with borrowed means that exceed what we actually own.

We believed that the moment of ownership would set us free, yet paradoxically, the instant we settle into that jewel-like space, 

life is sweetly mortgaged.

Youth is replaced by the diligence of repaying principal. The practiced labor of middle age is consumed in the struggle to maintain

what is owned. And behind the relief of ease in old age, emptiness waits.

The seasons of life that should have been lived freely, truly, as a human being, may become trapped between those walls and ceilings,

and simply evaporate.

The verb to live has quietly been replaced by the obligation to repay, and the modern person has become a figure 

who willingly takes on the punishment of holding up an enormous jewel of concrete.

This endless longing has now surpassed mere desire for shelter. It has become the new faith of this age,

a symbol of a hierarchy that cannot be challenged.

Within the lights of what appears to be the most solid of structures, the most fragile and anxious of human desires moves in,

becoming ever more fragmented, ever more isolated.

This is a record of a dazzling tragedy.

Does the jewel protect us?

Or does it bind us?

Are we the owners of the jewel?

Or the fuel burned to sustain its radiance?

Is what we are trying to hold onto a jewel of genuine worth?

Or merely another boulder, an illusion manufactured by the system?

"What Sisyphus may need is not greater strength to push the boulder higher,

but the courage to pause, and ask what it is he has been pushing all along."
